Three ways to get data

You can land in Thailand with a travel eSIM already installed, buy a tourist SIM from AIS, TrueMove H, or dtac, or do neither and let the home carrier roam. The first two are the ones to plan. The third is the default the phone will choose if data roaming stays on.

True and dtac merged in 2023 and both names are still on shop signs. Coverage is not the same in every province or on every island, so the SIM decision and the coverage-map check are related. Details and sources are on the Thailand guide.

Choose an eSIM when data is the job

Maps, mail, ride apps, and chat work on a data-only plan. You can install it before the flight and have it ready in the arrivals hall. A dual-SIM phone keeps the home SIM in place for bank texts. You do not get a Thai mobile number from a typical travel eSIM, and you cannot move that eSIM to another phone as easily as a plastic card.

The phone has to support eSIM and be unlocked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID before you pay. Providers and the install order are in the eSIM guide and in Set up an eSIM before you fly.

Choose a tourist SIM when you need a Thai number

Some hotel desks, delivery apps, and day-tour bookings want a local number they can call or message. A tourist SIM from an operator counter is the usual way to get one. The clerk registers it to your passport. That registration is a legal requirement. Bring the passport in your carry-on if you plan to buy at the airport.

Packages differ in days and in what they include. Prices and allowances change, so this page does not print them. Read the current page from AIS or the True and dtac tourist terms before you pay. A single-SIM phone means taking the home SIM out. Bank codes to that number wait until you swap it back, unless your bank can send them another way.

Skip default roaming

A daily travel pass from your home carrier feels simpler because you buy nothing in Thailand. The pass can start from a background update, bill you for a day of light use, and then fall onto a higher rate when the allowance is gone. Calls and voicemail forwarding can be charged on top. The mechanisms are on Roaming and bill shock. Turn data roaming off on the home line even if you also buy an eSIM.
